A World First

CHALKHILL LIVES is the world’s first community produced television and Internet soap opera.Based in Paulsgrove, Portsmouth, the soap films at various locations across the city.

The production broadcasts to the world via broadband Internet, and can be seen on national TV on the Community Channel.

Actively Engaging People
The ethos behind the production is to act as a tool for community cohesion, bringing together people of all ages to work together on the production.

Actively engaging people in the demanding filming process, which is then viewed on national TV, also helps boost esteem, enabling participants to succeed in other areas of their life.

Creating a Community TV Soap
RoadRunner Dispatch is pleased to have been working with the production since its conception in October 2001. Managing Director Kevin Edwards was introduced to the shows creator and Executive Producer – Steven Surridge - in his role as a business mentor for the Princes Trust.

Despite rejection of the idea from many community empowerment groups due to its untested pioneering ‘model’, with the support of Kevin, Steven was able to fulfil his vision of creating a community television soap.

Setting the net Wider
So successful has the model been in engaging and empowering individuals that it has now become a non-for-profit organisation, to fulfil its intentions and embrace the wider Hampshire community.

The premises of RoadRunner have featured extensively in the first 25 episodes of the soap, being used as a Youth Centre, police station and recruitment offices amongst others.
